# Teaching High-Frequency and Irregular Words Through Science of Reading

Elementary teachers face a persistent challenge: students encounter hundreds of common words that do not follow standard phonetic patterns. Moving beyond rote memorization requires instructional strategies grounded in the Science of Reading, the evidence-based approach that integrates phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.

Five evidence-based strategies help teachers embed irregular and high-frequency word instruction into coherent reading instruction.

**Morphological awareness.** Where applicable, teachers can help students see word patterns and relationships. The word "said" connects to "say." The word "one" appears in "once" and "lonely." Building awareness of these connections, even at early levels, strengthens orthographic knowledge and reduces the cognitive load of treating every irregular word as entirely novel.
