Syracuse University will review its executive and administrative staff roles as the private New York institution faces a projected budget deficit. The U.S. Department of Education released final accreditation regulations last week that take effect in July. Under the rules, accreditors must consider colleges' intellectual diversity policies and cannot enforce "illegal diversity, equity, and inclusion requirements" as defined by the Trump administration.

A department official stated, "For too long, accreditors have effectively served as a cartel to protect their interests, rather than the educational value that institutions of higher education are expected to deliver for students."
