The pattern is recognizable: hype, rapid rollout, half-baked implementation, teacher exhaustion, mixed results, quiet retreat.

AI feels different because it's genuinely more powerful. That's exactly why moving recklessly is more dangerous, not less.

Consider what speed prioritizes. It prioritizes vendors over educators. It prioritizes data collection over privacy protection. It prioritizes scalability over sustainability. A district that takes two years to carefully implement one AI system—training teachers thoroughly, establishing clear guardrails, genuinely studying outcomes—will have a much better product than one that deploys five systems in eighteen months because everyone's nervous about falling behind.

The "college and career readiness shifts" that strong school systems are making, according to recent education reporting, involve structural rethinking. That takes time. Building genuine school culture, as new principals are learning, requires patience and intention. These things aren't accomplished through speed. They're accomplished through deliberate choices.

Here's what responsible restraint looks like. It means piloting AI tools in limited contexts before system-wide rollout. It means dedicating serious professional development time before expecting teachers to use these systems effectively.
