Every few weeks, another education technology company announces it's deploying AI tutors at scale. Personalized learning! Adaptive algorithms! 24/7 availability! The pitch is intoxicating. Why wouldn't schools and districts want to move fast and deploy these systems everywhere?

The unpopular take is that restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy here.

We have a documented pattern in educational technology. Companies build exciting tools. Districts adopt them quickly. Implementation gets messy. Teachers get frustrated. Students experience variable results. The technology either gets abandoned or limps along underutilized. Repeat.

The current AI tutoring wave feels different only in its velocity and the hype surrounding it. It isn't.

Here's what's missing from the conversation: we don't actually know what good looks like yet. We have case studies. We have promising pilots. We have vendor-sponsored research showing positive outcomes. What we lack is the kind of longitudinal, independent evidence about how AI tutoring performs across different student populations, in different contexts, over time. Does it help struggling readers? Maybe. Does it help some students while harming others? Possibly. Does it create dependency on the algorithm instead of developing independent problem-solving? We're honestly not sure.

The technology adoption curve in education has a reputation problem for a reason. Companies promise transformation. Districts invest heavily. Educators are asked to change workflow overnight. Then the software sits half-implemented while IT scrambles to integrate it with legacy systems and teachers resort to workarounds.

This time, the pressure to move fast comes with an additional wrinkle: the competitive fear that your district will fall behind if you don't adopt immediately. That's a terrible reason to deploy any technology at scale, especially one designed to influence how students learn.

Restraint isn't about being anti-technology or Luddite. It's about being honest about what we're uncertain about.

A more measured approach might look like this: pilot the technology with clear success metrics. Include teachers in defining what success actually means, not just vendors. Run the pilot long enough to see what happens when novelty wears off. Study whether the tool helps close achievement gaps or widens them. Ask hard questions about data privacy, algorithmic bias, and whether students are developing the skills we actually want them to develop.

Only after that do you consider broader deployment.

Yes, this takes time. Yes, competitors may move faster. Yes, districts will feel pressure to keep up. But the cost of getting this wrong is higher than the cost of moving deliberately. We're talking about systems that directly influence how millions of students engage with learning.

The headlines about skills intelligence platforms replacing traditional learning management systems suggest that education technology leadership is actively rethinking how they approach adoption. That's encouraging. It means someone is paying attention to what doesn't work. We should extend that same critical thinking to AI tutoring.

The vendors will tell you the technology is ready. The pressure will tell you to move now. The competition will tell you to adopt before your neighbor does. None of those are good reasons.

What would actually serve students is slower, more deliberate implementation paired with rigorous evaluation. That approach doesn't make for exciting press releases. It doesn't move venture capital faster. It does, however, tend to produce better outcomes.

For education technology, that should be the only metric that matters.
