The narrative is always the same: move fast, secure supply chains, beat competitors to the punch. Nations and corporations are practically sprinting toward the world's resource-rich regions, framing hesitation as weakness.
Here's the unpopular take: restraint, not speed, may be the smarter strategy here.
I'm not arguing against the transition to renewable energy or the legitimate need for critical minerals that power batteries, semiconductors, and clean technology. Those imperatives are real. But the current global scramble is creating conditions for long-term disaster, and we're collectively ignoring the warning signs.
The speed-obsessed approach creates predictable casualties. When wealthy nations and multinational corporations race to extract resources from developing regions without adequate governance frameworks, exploitation follows. Labor standards collapse. Environmental safeguards become suggestions. Local communities bear costs that never appear on balance sheets. And as recent reporting has highlighted, armed groups in resource-rich areas exploit the chaos that desperate competition creates. Instability doesn't just hurt people on the ground. It destabilizes supply chains and creates the very scarcity the rush was meant to prevent.
Speed also prevents learning. Yes, we know how to extract lithium. But do we know the best, most sustainable ways to do it in each unique geographic and social context? The answer is usually no, because we're too busy racing to the next project. Compare this to how serious scientific advancement actually works. Scientists don't sprint toward conclusions. They test, iterate, revise. They build institutional knowledge. The global minerals sector could benefit from adopting that mindset instead of treating extraction like a 100-meter dash.
Consider what a restraint-based strategy might look like. It would prioritize building genuine partnerships with resource-rich nations rather than extraction agreements. It would fund research into more efficient extraction, recycling, and mineral alternatives before racing to new reserves. It would establish binding international standards for labor and environmental protection and actually enforce them. It would acknowledge that some regions may not be ready for large-scale extraction and that's okay, not a failure.
This approach takes longer. That's the point. It also costs more upfront. That's also the point. But it creates conditions where supply chains are actually resilient, where host countries build genuine capacity and benefit long-term, and where the minerals we extract don't come with hidden bills we'll pay later through geopolitical instability or environmental collapse.
The paradox is this: moving slower now could mean faster progress later. Rushing creates technical debt, social debt, and environmental debt. We end up solving the same problems repeatedly, in different countries, with different names but identical patterns of failure. Restraint forces us to solve problems once, properly, so we can actually move forward.
The clean energy transition is urgent. Nobody disputes that. But urgency doesn't require recklessness. It doesn't require pretending that every region should be developed at maximum speed regardless of capacity. It doesn't require assuming that problems created by haste can be fixed later with more haste.
Global mineral security isn't a sprint. It's a decades-long challenge that will unfold across multiple generations. We need to build systems that can sustain that timeline, that benefit the people living in resource-rich regions, and that don't create new crises while solving existing ones.
The unpopular truth is that sometimes the fastest way forward is to pause, plan carefully, and proceed deliberately.
