The finding reflects how rapidly generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and specialized education platforms have embedded themselves into a process that traditionally depended on school counselors, college guides, and face-to-face campus visits.

The shift raises questions about equity, accuracy, and the future role of human guidance in college advising. Students using AI report deploying the technology for multiple tasks: researching institutions, identifying schools that match their academic profiles, drafting application essays, and exploring potential majors. College admissions officers and high school counselors are watching this trend closely. The American Association for Counseling and Development and the National Association for College Admission Counseling have not yet issued formal guidelines on AI use in applications, though many institutions acknowledge students may legitimately use AI as a research and brainstorming tool. When students submit essays or responses that AI generates without substantial revision or personal voice, admissions officers report they can often detect the difference.

The timing matters. High school counselors already face significant workload challenges. In many schools, especially those in under-resourced districts, individual guidance about college options remains limited. AI fills that gap for some students, offering instant answers and personalized suggestions. For others, particularly those with strong parental support or access to private counseling, AI supplements existing guidance rather than replacing it.

Data on which students adopt AI tools reveal patterns worth monitoring. Early adopters tend to cluster in higher-income households and schools with robust technology infrastructure. Students in rural areas or under-resourced schools may lack reliable internet access or awareness of these tools. This divergence risks widening existing disparities in college preparation and access.
