# New Blood Tests for Alzheimer's Show Promise but Won't Diagnose Disease
Blood tests for Alzheimer's disease have entered clinical practice, offering a way to detect brain changes years before symptoms appear. These tests measure biomarkers like phosphorylated tau and amyloid-beta in the bloodstream, proteins that accumulate in the brains of Alzheimer's patients.
The tests do not diagnose Alzheimer's. Instead, they identify whether someone carries biological markers associated with the disease. A positive result means your brain shows pathological changes typical of Alzheimer's, but it does not guarantee you will develop cognitive decline or dementia.
The clinical value centers on risk stratification. People with positive biomarkers face elevated risk compared to those without them, but progression timelines vary dramatically. Some remain cognitively normal for years or decades after biomarker positivity emerges. Others decline more rapidly.
Current guidelines suggest considering these tests for cognitively normal people with a family history of Alzheimer's, those worried about memory, or individuals over 65 seeking early detection. The Mayo Clinic and other major medical centers now offer blood biomarker testing through specialized memory clinics.
The key limitation: no proven treatment stops disease progression in asymptomatic people with positive biomarkers. Lecanemab, a monoclonal antibody approved by the FDA, slows cognitive decline in early symptomatic disease but works only for those with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia plus confirmed amyloid pathology.
Lifestyle factors still matter most. Regular exercise, cognitive engagement, quality sleep, Mediterranean-style diet, and social connection reduce Alzheimer's risk regardless of biomarker status. Blood tests identify risk but do not replace these interventions.
