# Designing for Depth: When High Achievement Isn't the Whole Story

Most teachers and schools measure student learning through visible metrics. Grades, test scores, accuracy rates, and completed assignments dominate how educators assess whether students actually understand material. TeachThought argues this approach misses the fuller picture of learning.

They need opportunities to revise work based on feedback. They need exposure to multiple representations of ideas, not one textbook explanation. This approach takes longer but builds stronger understanding.

The shift matters most for students traditionally underserved by achievement-focused systems. When schools narrow their view of learning to test scores and grades, they often shortchange students who think differently or need more time to develop expertise. Designing for depth includes all learners, not just those who perform fastest.
