The winners will be the operators who simplify the mess, not the ones who add another layer of hype.

That's my thesis, and the education technology space needs to hear it. Because right now, we're drowning in solutions that promise to solve teacher burnout and institutional resilience, when what teachers actually need is fewer things to learn.

Walk into most K-12 or higher ed settings today, and you'll find a teacher juggling a learning management system, a grading platform, a communication tool, a curriculum repository, an assessment engine, and whatever the latest AI-powered "instructional companion" the administration decided was essential. Each tool arrived with a promise. Each tool demanded training hours, credential management, and integration prayers.

Teacher training needs more community and less compliance, as recent commentary has noted. But here's what that really means: teachers need peers they trust and time to master tools that actually make their work simpler. Instead, we're giving them spreadsheets of platform features and mandatory onboarding sessions that feel like checking boxes.

The paradox is sharp. Every vendor in the edtech space genuinely believes their product reduces teacher burden. They're not wrong to feel that way. But when an institution buys seven "burden-reduction" tools, the cumulative effect is suffocation, not relief.

This matters because burnout isn't just a morale problem. When experienced teachers leave the profession, they take institutional knowledge, relationships with students, and hard-won classroom management skills. Retention is the real resilience metric that matters.

So what would simplification actually look like?

It starts with honesty. An institution needs to audit its tech stack and ask: which tools do teachers actually use? Which ones exist because procurement liked them two years ago? Which ones duplicate functionality? The answers are often brutal. But the audit is the necessary first step toward actual simplification.

Second, it means choosing integration over proliferation. Instead of buying the flashiest new AI tool, pick one platform ecosystem and build competency there. Let teachers become experts at something, not mediocre users of everything.

Third, it requires treating teacher input as a compliance matter, not a nice-to-have. If teachers aren't part of the procurement decision, the tool will fail to earn adoption anyway. Better to involve them early and slower, than deploy fast and wonder why adoption is a ghost town.

The institutions that win the next decade will be the ones that make life easier for teachers, not more complicated. That's not revolutionary thinking, but it is increasingly rare.

I've watched higher ed institutions spend millions on resilience frameworks and change management consultants, only to ignore what would actually create resilience: a faculty that isn't exhausted, frustrated, and looking at other careers. I've seen K-12 districts adopt cutting-edge platforms and then struggle to find time for teachers to use them effectively.

The hype machine around edtech is powerful. AI is genuinely important to education's future. But the most sophisticated AI tool in the world becomes a burden if teachers lack the bandwidth to learn it properly, or if it sits alongside six other tools that do similar work.

The winners will simplify. They'll prune their technology gardens ruthlessly. They'll invest in depth of training on fewer platforms. They'll listen when teachers say a tool isn't working, and they'll act on that feedback without treating it as insubordination.

That's not sexy. It doesn't generate conference talks or attract venture capital. But it's the only path to actually reducing teacher burden instead of repackaging it as innovation.
