There is a comfortable narrative we have settled into about young people and technology. Students today are "digital natives," the thinking goes. They grew up with screens. They intuitively understand the digital world. Therefore, they need less instruction, less guidance, and less skepticism about how they engage with technology in their learning.
This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
The reality is more complicated. Yes, today's students have grown up with smartphones and social media. But familiarity with using a device is not the same as understanding how to think critically about it. A teenager who can navigate TikTok's algorithm may have no idea how that algorithm actually works, or what incentives shape the content they see. They are consumers of technology, not necessarily architects of it or critics of it.
Recent conversations about how young people feel about AI illustrate the point. Some students express enthusiasm. Others express anxiety. But the dominant assumption remains that digital fluency is automatic, that "kids these days" somehow possess an innate ability to manage technological change that previous generations lacked. This assumption is doing students a disservice.
Consider what happens in the classroom. If a teacher assumes a student understands technology deeply simply because they own a phone, that teacher is unlikely to teach digital literacy explicitly. They are unlikely to discuss how to evaluate sources online, how to recognize manipulation in design, how to understand their own attention as a finite resource being fought over by competing platforms. These are skills that must be taught. They do not come naturally.
The "digital native" framing also conveniently absolves institutions of responsibility. If students are native to the digital world, the thinking goes, then educators do not need to invest heavily in technology literacy or in helping students develop healthy relationships with their devices. The problem becomes individualized. It is up to each student to manage their own screen time, their own social media use, their own relationship with AI tools. Structural questions fade into the background.
But students are not just individuals navigating technology in isolation. They are part of educational systems, peer networks, and larger attention economies designed by people with financial incentives. When a school assumes students need no help understanding these systems, that school is choosing not to equip them for the world they actually inhabit.
The other risk is that this narrative creates a false equivalence between different kinds of digital engagement. A student who spends four hours a day scrolling social media is not necessarily more digitally literate than a student who spends two hours a week on focused research using online databases. Quantity of screen time tells us nothing about the quality of digital thinking. Yet the "digital native" myth can make us overlook this distinction.
What students actually need is not less structure around technology use, but more intentional structure. They need teachers who can help them think like critics of the digital world, not just consumers of it. They need to understand the economics of attention. They need to know what data about them is being collected and why. They need practice evaluating the credibility of digital sources. They need permission to be skeptical about the inevitability of technological change.
The uncomfortable truth is that being surrounded by technology does not automatically teach you to understand it. Young people deserve better than a school system that assumes they have mastered something simply because it is ubiquitous in their lives. They deserve educators willing to push back against the myth of the digital native and, instead, teach digital citizenship as seriously as any other essential skill.
The future belongs to students who can think critically about technology, not just comfortably within it.
