According to cybersecurity experts, building effective defenses starts not with firewalls or flashy technology, but with understanding and securing the data layer, where schools store student records, grades, attendance, financial information, and operational systems.
The data layer represents the foundation of school operations. When ransomware or breaches strike, recovery depends on what happens at this level. Schools that map their critical data, understand who accesses it, and build backup systems around it recover faster and suffer fewer disruptions to learning.
Districts typically overlook this approach, instead investing heavily in perimeter security and endpoint protection. These tools matter, but they miss the point. A ransomware attack that encrypts the data layer can shut down schools for weeks, even if firewalls and antivirus software function perfectly. Students cannot access learning management systems. Teachers cannot retrieve grades. Administrators cannot process payroll.
