There is a narrative that has calcified in education circles over the past decade: today's students are "digital natives" who naturally thrive with technology in the classroom. Schools that resist this notion are portrayed as backward. Teachers who question it are dismissed as Luddites. Parents who worry about screen time are told they don't understand how the world works anymore.
This trend is being sold as inevitable. It deserves more skepticism than it is getting.
The assumption underpinning this narrative is seductive in its simplicity. Young people grew up around screens. Therefore, they learn better with screens. Therefore, schools must digitize faster. It follows logically, almost mathematically. But education doesn't work that way, and neither does human cognition.
Consider what we know about attention and learning. Decades of cognitive science suggest that deep learning requires sustained focus on a single task, often in the absence of distraction. A student taking notes by hand engages different neural pathways than one typing notes on a laptop. A teenager reading a physical book processes information differently than scanning the same text on a phone. Growing up around these technologies does not override these fundamental aspects of how brains work.
The "digital native" framing also obscures real variation among students. Not all teenagers engage with technology the same way. Some are heavy social media users; others deliberately avoid it. Some have learned sophisticated digital literacy skills; others have not. Treating an entire generation as a monolith based on their birth year is reductive and unhelpful.
What troubles me more is how this narrative serves institutional interests that may not align with student welfare. Educational technology companies have enormous financial incentives to expand their presence in schools. There is nothing wrong with innovation, but when we accept the premise that digitization is inevitable, we stop asking whether every instance of it is actually beneficial. We stop demanding rigorous evidence. We stop protecting space for low-tech or no-tech learning modes.
Recent discussions about how young people view emerging technologies reveal something interesting: teenagers themselves are often ambivalent about screens in learning contexts. They may love social media and gaming, yet recognize that constant connectivity can fragment their attention. They may want devices in school for certain purposes while understanding they can be distracting for others. This nuance gets flattened when we treat digital integration as a simple good.
The deeper issue is that the "digital native" narrative lets us off the hook. Instead of asking hard questions about pedagogy, classroom design, and what students actually need to learn, we can simply add technology and declare ourselves modern. Instead of investing in teacher training, we can assume teachers will figure it out. Instead of examining whether a particular tool serves a specific educational goal, we can adopt it because it seems like the direction history is moving.
But history is not a force beyond our control. School design is a choice. How we integrate technology is a choice. Whether every classroom becomes a device-dense environment or whether we preserve deliberate spaces for thinking, writing, and talking without screens is a choice we make collectively.
I am not arguing for wholesale rejection of educational technology. Many tools genuinely enhance learning for many students in many contexts. What I am arguing for is humility about claims of inevitability and more rigorous, case-by-case thinking about implementation.
The question we should be asking is not whether students are digital natives and therefore need digital learning. The question is simpler: does this particular technology serve this particular learning goal for these particular students? Sometimes the answer is yes. Often, it deserves to be no.
Students deserve skepticism directed at the trends being implemented on their behalf, not just toward the trends themselves.
