# Why Racism in Football Escapes Workplace Safety Standards

Football's governing bodies treat racist abuse as a public relations crisis rather than a workplace hazard, allowing them to perform concern without addressing root causes. This framing enables FIFA and the Premier League to issue statements and hand out fines while avoiding the structural changes that would protect players and staff.

When organizations classify racism as a workplace hazard, they trigger legal obligations. Employers must conduct risk assessments, implement prevention protocols, and create reporting systems with teeth. They face liability. They must act or face enforcement. Instead, football leagues treat racist incidents as isolated moral failings by individual fans or players, disconnected from systemic problems in how clubs operate, how security works, and how consequences get enforced.

The distinction matters. A player who experiences racist chanting during a match currently has limited recourse through employment law because governing bodies have not designated racism as an occupational safety issue.
